  • Sweden, 1 find of 8 lamellar plates from Birka [STEPHENSON 2007: p.87][HEDENSTIERNA-JONSON 2006: p.58]

Discussion
Lamelar armour originated from Byzantium and was adopted to a limited degree by the Carolingians. There is some evidence for lamellar being made from horn or leather [DAWSON 2009: p.62].
Only a single find of Lamellar has been found in Scandinavia from the Viking period and that is from the Birka garrison [HOLMQUIST OLAUSSON 1998: p.7] and was possibly of Turkish origin [STEPHENSON 2007: p.87]. 8 different sizes [HEDENSTIERNA-JONSON 2006: p.58].
Other earlier and later finds include: Korsbetningen in Visby C14th [HOLMQUIST OLAUSSON 1998: p.7]; Charavines in Provence c.1000AD [NICOLLE 2005: p.63]; Niederstotzingen c.600AD [PAULSEN 1967]; Cartagena, Spain C7th [VIZCAINO SANCHEZ 2008]

Scale armour

Scale armour has scales fastened to a garment of cloth or leather and overlapped downward. [DAWSON 2009: p.10]
