In 1846 he illustrated the Claughton items held by the Society of Antiquities of London. An earlier watercolour was made by the amateur antiquarian John Weld and found as a loose leaf in his sketch book and bearing the date 1834. There are a number of differences between the two drawings including the shape of the crossbar. Weld shows it as being straight where as Jones shows it being slightly curved.
